Plan ahead when using dry ice in your Halloween displays. Watch the video below and then follow our short list of tips at the bottom of the video to make it safe, and simple.
More Details
#1 - Have gloves on-hand before beginning working with your large block of dry ice (usually about #10 pounds worth for a 6 hour event). DO NOT EVER TOUCH THE ICE WITH YOUR BARE HANDS IT COULD CAUSE SEVERE BURNS!!
#2 - Break up your block of dry ice into what feels like golf ball sized pieces by placing your block, still wrapped in butcher block paper into a canvas bag or old pillow case. Smash repeatedly with a hammer on the floor or somewhere it won't do any damage. I usually smash it on the cement driveway or sidewalk.
#2 - Using a plastic scoop, plastic serving spoon or plastic tongs, place a small amount (about 6-8) pieces of dry ice into a plastic bucket or tempered glass dish to place near your display. DO NOT USE a plain glass, aluminum or metal bowl it will either break, get so cold it vibrates or potentially cause severe burns. Do not leave the tongs, scoop or spoon in the bucket between uses.
#3 - Only put one small piece of dry ice into a vessel of liquid at a time until you reach your desired effect. You get much better and longer results that will let you space it out enough to make it last into the end of your party.
#4 Cover the dry ice in your bucket or dish with some newspaper and a towel. Keep unused portion in freezer wrapped in newspaper or butcher block paper until ready to use. Only take out what you might need for 30-45 minutes.
